Ice Rescue

Prince George Search and Rescue has a specialized Ice Rescue team. This team is involved in searches and rescues around frozen lakes, rivers, and ponds. Often members of this team are also members of the Swiftwater team and are very comfortable operating in water environments.

Each member takes an “Ice Rescue Technician” course after taking their GSAR, where they learn how to manage cold injuries, walk safely on ice, self-rescue from the water, and how to anchor each other on the ice. Similar to Swiftwater Rescue, each member wears PPE including a dry suit, gloves, helmet, PFD, gloves, and footwear. Because the Ice Rescue team operates in much colder environments, added care must be given to warm clothing layering. The team is especially aware of the risk of hypothermia, for both subjects and team members.
